"My idea of good company ... is the company of clever, well-informed people who have a great deal of conversation; that is what I call good company.”
Anne Elliot to Mr. Elliot, Chapter 16, Persuasion
AustenNovice.blogspot.com welcomes you
AustenNovice.blogspot.com is a blog relating to “all things Austen” today, with one difference: It is geared specifically to those just beginning to discover Jane Austen and her world. Bringing “Janeites” together with Austen initiates, AustenNovice will feature news of film adaptations, mini-series, Austen-inspired books, reviews, Austen events and travel ideas related to the author, her life and her milieu. “All things Austen” are welcome, provided commenting readers “stay with” the premise of AustenNovice – to provide Austen newcomers with pertinent information that will enhance their understanding and enjoyment of all things Jane.
I decided to launch AustenNovice.blogspot.com remembering well the excitement I experienced after picking up my first Austen book, Pride and Prejudice, in my teens. Reading all Austen's titles at least once, and some two or three times (with at least 8 readings over the years of P and P), I have followed many things relating to Austen, her novels and the Regency period. While hardly among the Austen experts I see in the “blogosphere,” I nonetheless understand the fascination with her work and “things Austen” today. As many have noted, Austen was a genius in her knowledge of the “human heart” and one of our greatest writers. I hope here to create a free environment where topical information can mingle with others’ personal reactions to Austen works, adaptations and information regarding how she lived. It seems that once people discover Austen, they cannot leave her, returning again and again for her great characters, observations and literary prowess. So, whether you are new to Austen or not, let’s blog on!
